tw: suicide
hey all this suicide awareness this week and the willingness of the good people of tumblr to help others in need is great and everything but you need to remember that while you might not have a strong negative visceral reaction to suicide and/or the mention thereof, this is not true of everyone on tumblr, and even things like awareness posts need to have the appropriate triggers.
yes, seriously, they do.
suicide is a really common trigger, and posts meant to evoke strong emotion like most of these awareness-raising posts do? p r e t t y fucking triggering.
like I get that you guys mean well but I can’t count the number of times I have seen screenshots of anons telling people to kill themselves horrifically, alleged suicide notes, gifs or graphics depicting suicide or attempted suicide, detailed anecdotes, etc. reblogged without so much as a tag or a warning.
if someone who follows you who has struggled with suicide in the past — because they or someone they know was suicidal, because someone they know committed suicide, whatever — is going through their dash and suddenly sees a gif of a person with a gun to their head or anons saying “lol kill yourself” or another tumblr user saying that they want to die and they mean it, what do you think that’s going to do to them?
I know you guys want to help and it would be really fucking unfortunate if your good will wound up perpetuating the issue that you’re trying to help address or solve.
so please, tag and add warnings. if it’s a triggering image, reblog it as a link. add warnings at the top like the one this post has. tag it (trigger warning: suicide, tw: suicide).
and since the two often go hand in hand, also use your judgement to determine whether or not a warning for self harm is appropriate.
